Many people have at one time or another experienced swollen fingers or puffy eyes. But sometimes the two occur at the same time. Luckily, there is generally no cause for alarm if this happens to you.
Edema
Occasional swelling in the face and extremities is nothing to be alarmed about, but if you experience this on a daily basis, you should check with your doctor to see if a hormone imbalance may be the cause, according to eyedoctorguide.com. In the meantime, try sleeping with your head elevated on an extra pillow.
Allergies
A histamine response to an insect bite or other allergen can sometimes cause swelling. If your eyes also itch, check for allergies.
Dehydration
Dehydration may cause puffiness as your body attempts to store water, according to eyecaresource.com.
Scleroderma
Chronic swelling, particularly in the fingers, may be an early sign of scleroderma if other causes have been ruled out. This degenerative disease begins with swelling and ends with hardening of the skin and connective tissue.
Considerations
You can often relieve edema with sufficient water intake and used, cool teabags on your eyes. If your symptoms get worse, contact your doctor.
