  • For a woman diagnosed with PCOS, it's common to have more questions than answers. She might be left wondering what PCOS is and what it will mean for future pregnancies.

    Identification

PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome and indicates fluid-filled sacs on one or both ovaries. Ovaries also are often larger than normal. PCOS is one of the leading causes of female infertility.

    Effects

Having PCOS can make getting pregnant more difficult. The ovarian cysts can prevent the ovaries from functioning as they should, making menstruation and ovulation irregular or absent. PCOS also increases the chances of miscarriage.

    Symptoms

For some, the only symptom of PCOS is infertility. More commonly, women with PCOS have irregular periods, weight gain, increased facial hair, skin tags or acne. Some women are diagnosed when cysts are felt during a pelvic exam or when blood tests show high testosterone levels or unusual cholesterol readings.

    Treatment

Women trying to conceive might be given a fertility drug such as Clomid to give ovulation a boost. There is a link between high insulin levels and PCOS, so a drug commonly prescribed for diabetes, like Metformin, also might be prescribed. If a woman is taking such a drug when pregnancy occurs, some ob/gyns will order the drug continued throughout the first trimester to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

    Improving Chances

Women with PCOS who are overweight might increase their chances of conception by losing weight, eating a well-balanced diet and exercising. Also, some women report that having a child resets their menstrual cycles, making conception easier the second time around.
