  • Seroquel, a brand name for the medication quetiapine, comes in tablets of 25 milligrams, 50 milligrams,100 milligrams, 200 milligrams, or 300 milligrams. The extended release formula, Seroquel XR, comes in 50, 150, 200, 300, or 400 milligrams. The medication belongs to the class of atypical antipsychotics and treats schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism and psychosis in children.

    Dosage

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 50 milligrams per day is a common starting dosage for patients being treated for schizophrenia or psychosis. 50 milligrams twice per day is the starting dose for mania.

    Side Effects

Seroquel runs less risk than other antipsychotics of causing potentially serious extrapyramidal side effects (EPS). EPS affect the extrapyramidal region of the central nervous system, which controls muscle control and movement. Common side effects that occur in more than 10 percent of patients include agitation, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

    Drug Interactions

Patients taking Seroquel in conjunction with certain antifungals or antidepressants may require close monitoring. Avoid alcohol because it can greatly increase the sedative effect of the medication.

    Cessation

Take the medication as directed by your doctor and/or pharmacist. Do not cease dosage without the permission of your doctor.

    Warning

Elderly patients should not take Seroquel as they run a high risk of experiencing a fatal cardiovascular incident. Patients under the age of 24 might experience suicidal thoughts and should work closely with their doctor to monitor symptoms and progress.
