  • Migraines are powerful headaches that cause great pain, but they are not all created equal. There are a variety of types of migraines that can be treated in different ways, including the complex migraine.

    Complex Migraine

Complex migraines can affect brain function so severely that they cause symptoms that could be misdiagnosed as a stroke.

    Symptoms

Symptoms of a complex migraine include weakness, cold hands, heavy limbs, congestion, loss of sensation in the body, aching pain in the head and hallucinations.

    Causes

Depression, hormonal disorders, fatty foods, medication, low blood sugar and changes in the blood flow pattern in the brain have all been suggested as causes for complex migraines, though there is no one specific cause of the condition.

    Treatment

Many medicines can help treat complex migraines, including isometheptene, Botox, BTXA, butalbital, dichloralphenazone, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen and ketorolac.

    Avoidance

Avoid fatty foods or those that contain MSG, as they may trigger complex migraines. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables daily to keep your blood sugar level balanced, as low blood sugar may also cause complex migraines. Exercising regularly stimulates blood flow to the brain, which can help reverse or treat migraines caused by poor blood flow.
