  • Stair railings are a relatively simple do-it-yourself project that will make your stairways safer and more attractive. After you have determined what type of material to make the railing out of, you will want to make sure to install it properly.

    Materials for Railings

Railings can be made out of a number of materials ranging from rubber, to metal, to wood. The ideal railing is one that is easy to grip, is solid and looks good with the stairway beside your staircase. Wood railings are a popular choice. Whatever material you choose, measure the diagonal length where you want to install your railing and cut your railing material slightly longer then this length.

    Attach to the Wall

Some railings can be attached directly to the wall as the stairs may have walls on either side. This is one of the easier types of railings to build. You will need connecting brackets that attach the railing to the wall itself. These brackets can be bought from a hardware store and should be made out of a strong metal-like steel. They should also attach to the wall and stick off the wall at an angle, so that the railing sits about 1 inch or so from the wall itself. Attach these brackets to the railing first and then attach the railing and brackets to the wall.

    Building Posts

With many stairs, posts need to be installed to support the railing. These posts should all be the same length. Attach them to the stairs themselves first, with screws appropriate for the material the post and stairs are made out of. At the top of each post, there should be a place where the railing can easily run and be affixed with small brackets or screws to the post itself. These posts can be attached every stair or every two to three stairs. It all depends on how you want your railing to look on the stairs and how much support is needed for the railing itself.
