  • If your laptop backlight is too bright, it can cause eye strain, headaches and eventual vision problems. It also will more quickly deplete your laptop's battery life. If your screen is a bit too bright for you, adjust the laptop light to a more comfortable brightness level for your eyes and add a few minutes to your battery life at the same time.

    Adjust Lighting Using Shortcut Keys

If you're using a PC, look for the key on your laptop that will allow you to adjust your lighting level. Most laptops have two keys right next to one another, each with a picture of a sun on it. One key will have an arrow pointing up, and the other will have a key with an arrow pointing down. Hold down the function "Fn," or "Shift" key to make these lighting-level buttons work. Use these keys to make your lighting brighter or dimmer without ever having to open a menu. The process is quite similar for a Mac, except that the keys will have pictures of a sun, but one will be larger than the other. The larger sun signifies the key that will make the light brighter, and the smaller one will cause the light to dim.

    Change Brightness Using Menu Settings

Alternately, use a PC's control panel to adjust the brightness. To do so, click on the "Start" button and wait for the menu to pop up. Locate the Control Panel, normally found in the menu that pops up to the right of the initial start menu. Select "Calibrate Display Color." This will allow you to change all of the settings related to your display, including the brightness of the backlight. If using a Mac, Select the Apple menu in the top left corner of your monitor display. Navigate to "System Preferences" and click the "Display" option. From here you will see the option to make your display brighter or darker depending on your needs.
