  • There are few experiences more soothing than resting beside a roaring fire in a fireplace. With each use of the fireplace, however, soot and dirt are released from the flames onto the stone surround. Over time, a black film will develop, causing your fireplace to appear unsightly and release an odor when it becomes warm. Fortunately, cleaning a stone fireplace is a process that requires only a few materials and needs to be done only after the end of each winter season.

    Preparation

To prepare for cleaning, tape off the floor and walls surrounding the stone fireplace using large tarps and painter's tape. The goal is to avoid transferring chemicals and soot to the areas around the fireplace. Put on protective clothing, such as long pants and a shirt with long sleeves. Also, put on gloves, eye goggles and a face mask for protection against the chemicals you will mix. Because fumes from the chemicals can cause irritation, clear the room of pets and children. Having windows open while cleaning can help improve ventilation.

    Cleaning

For the cleaning solution, fill a bucket with 3 qt. of water. Measure out 1/2 cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) and pour it into the bucket. TSP can be purchased at home supply stores. Dip a nylon-bristled scrub brush into the mixture and apply the solution to the stones at the top, left-hand side of the fireplace. Scrub the stones until the black film begins to lift. Re-dip your brush, as necessary. It is best to work in sections beginning at the top to avoid transferring dirt to the stones below while cleaning.

    Rinsing and Drying

Rinsing the TSP from the stones is the final step in cleaning your stone fireplace. Fill a bucket with warm water and dip a cloth into it. Wipe the stones beginning at the top and working your way down with the wet cloth. After the entire fireplace has been rinsed, go back over the stones with a dry towel. Do your best to remove all the surface moisture. To speed drying, use a floor fan across from the fireplace.
