CFIDS---chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome---commonly referred to as chronic fatigue, causes extreme tiredness that does not improve with rest, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Root Cause
The root cause of CFIDS is unknown, but different triggers may cause the symptoms of this condition, according to the CFIDS Association of America.
Illness
According to MedlinePlus, suggested but not proven causes of CFIDS include viruses such as Epstein-Barr (human herpes virus-4) and human herpes virus-6, which also causes roseola, a childhood illness.
Immune System
Inflammation in the nervous system caused by an immune response may be another factor in the development of CFIDS, reports MedlinePlus.
Age and Sex
Women and people in their 40s and 50s appear more likely to have CFIDS, although these risk factors are unconfirmed, according to the Mayo Clinic, especially as women may simply be more likely to report symptoms.
Other Risk Factors
Other risk factors for CFIDS include, according to MedlinePlus, stress, environment and genes (the condition may be partly inherited).
