  • Most homes don't come with soundproof walls, much to the dismay of many people. If you are looking for affordable ways to soundproof a room, you can achieve some measure of success. While there is no way to fully soundproof an already built room without doing a bit of construction, there are some things you can do to muffle sound.

    Lay Carpet

Lay carpet down, if there isn't any already. The thicker and shaggier, the better. Carpet absorbs sound, whereas flat tile and cement do not. These can even amplify sound and cause reverberation.

    Hang Drapes

Hang heavy drapes. The thicker, the better. While hanging drapes over your windows absorbs some sound, many people choose to take it further and hang thick drapes on the walls as well. Hanging drapes from floor to ceiling on all four walls is a great way to muffle sound from outside, and much cheaper than adding insulation behind them.

    Add Furniture

Bring more furniture into the room. Many don't realize that furniture plays a huge role in absorbing sound in any room, especially those not designed to be soundproof. Nice, plush furniture absorbs sound, and the more you have of it, the better.
