  • Ontario, Canada, provides its teachers with uniform standards that allow each teacher to work efficiently at a high rigor. It is accountable to the public education system by ensuring that skilled, quality teachers are in the classroom. In order to become a teacher in Ontario, there are specific requirements.

    High School Diploma

Graduating from high school is a requirement, but it is not enough. Because of the competitive nature of getting hired in Ontario, good grades and extracurricular activities will speak volumes to your potential employer.

    Post-Secondary Education

At least three years must be completed at a university toward an undergraduate degree and, in addition, at least one year of school toward a bachelor of education must be completed.

    Volunteer Experience

Unless you have previous teaching experience somewhere else, you will want to display an interest in teaching and working with children through volunteer efforts at recreation centers, schools or anywhere in the community.

    Technological Teachers

Instead of the college education, technological teachers are required to have at least five years of experience in their field or a combination of both education and work experience.

Become Certified by the Ontario College of Teachers

The Ontario College of Teachers "licenses, governs and regulates Ontario's teaching profession in the public interest," setting the "ethical and practice standards for educators. You can apply to the college online, pay the annual and membership fees totaling approximately $260 (depending on your education and citizenship information) and be ready to provide proof of identity and pass a criminal background check.
