  • Salmonella poisoning is one of the most common types of food poisoning and occurs when food or water is contaminated with salmonella bacteria. Symptoms will present themselves between eight to 48 hours after being infected and will last anywhere from four to seven days.

    Abdominal pain

One of the first symptoms of salmonella poisoning is abdominal discomfort in the form of cramping or tenderness.

    Temperature

Individuals will often get a fever after eating food contaminated with salmonella and may experience the chills.

    Vomiting

Nausea and/or vomiting is a symptom of salmonella poisoning. If the body is unable to rid itself of the poison via regurgitation, diarrhea may occur.

    Body Discomfort

Salmonella poisoning also creates muscle pain.

    Long-term Effects

Most patients recover completely after being infected with salmonella; however, patients who experienced diarrhea may continue to experience this symptom for several months. A small percentage of people will retain long-term symptoms such as joint pain, eye irritation and painful urination.
