Cell phones with GPS technology make our lives easier by helping us get to where we need to go. They use both the GPS satellite system and the cellular network to provide up-to-date information on the go.
GPS Satellites
Inside the phone is a GPS satellite receiver that locks on to the signal from the satellites. It then computes your location based on the signal data that it receives.
Cellular Network
Stand-alone GPS units have maps and point-of-interest data programmed into them. Cell phones use their networks to get map data and point-of-interest information.
Advantages to Cellular System
Since a phone gets information from the cellular network, the data it receives are more current. The service providers keep the information updated.
Disadvantages to Cellular GPS
Because the phone gets the GPS map and other information from the network, you need to be in an area with coverage to use the service.
Cell Tower Assistance
Some cell phone location services can use the cell tower network in addition to the satellite network to determine locations.
