Intense migraine headaches can cause difficulty in day-to-day life. These painful headaches vary by symptoms, cause and the area of the brain they affect. Otic migraines are one type of migraines.
Otic Migraines
Otic or vestibular migraines are migraines that affect the vestibular system. The vestibular system controls your balance.
Symptoms
Vertigo, imbalance, dizziness, unsteadiness, motion sickness, muffled hearing and ringing in the ear are all symptoms of otic migraines. Otic migraines also feature classic migraine symptoms, such as severe headaches and sensitivity to light.
Causes
There is no known specific cause of migraines; however, low blood sugar, stress, poor sleep, bad diet, chocolate, red wine, coffee, caffeinated drinks, cheeses and MSG have all been shown to exasperate migraine symptoms.
Treatment
Persistent otic migraines can be treated by beta-blocking agents, calcium channel blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, gabapentin, clonazepam, sodium valproate and other medicines. Talk to your doctor to find the best treatment option for you.
Prevention
There are methods to prevent otic migraines before they begin. Avoid foods that can trigger migraines. You should exercise often to provide your brain with plenty of oxygen, which may help avoid migraines. Carefully manage your stress and try to relax daily.
