  • Autograph collecting is a fascinating and popular hobby that may bring a little bit of celebrity or history into your personal life, and can prove to be profitable, as well. However, despite what you may see on TV, appraisal requires more than a 10-minute examination by an autograph expert.

    Appraisal Factors

As an assessment of the value of an autograph, an appraisal is important for both selling and insuring the piece. It is not a one-time valuation, however, since it is based on a variety of factors: current market value (known sale prices), condition of the autograph and condition of the autographed item. A crisp, clear signature is more valuable to collectors than one that is faded or even slightly smudged. Current demand and the difficulty of getting certain celebrity autographs are factors, as well. While authentic historical autographs (George Washington or Abraham Lincoln) maintain their value due to rarity, the rise and fall in the popularity of celebrities and sports figures affects the value of their signatures. Most appraisals should be done every two to three years and can cost as little as $19.95 or, when combined with authentication, as much as $150 or more. Therefore, the professional reputation of an appraiser is important and can be well worth the expense, especially if the autographs are believed to be particularly valuable. When contacting an appraiser, be sure to include the "provenance" (its history), as this is particularly important in determining the value of an autograph. Lists of accredited appraisers are available from The American Society of Appraisers and the Professional Autograph Dealers Association. Appraiser listings from both organizations are categorized according to their areas of expertise.

    Beware of Forgeries

Authenticity is the most important factor in the appraisal process, especially since the forgery of documents, photographs and sports items is particularly lucrative. Technology has made the counterfeiting of autographs easier, as well as the celebrities, themselves, cashing in with the use of auto-pens to sign multiple photos at one time. The only way to be absolutely positive your celebrity autograph is authentic is to get it yourself, in person.
