A well-stocked first aid kit can be invaluable in an emergency. You can buy a prepared kit or put together a kit that will meet your specific needs. Be sure to check your kit regularly to restock items and check expiration dates. A typical first aid kit should include a few standard items.

Protective Barriers

For protection against germs and communicable disease, include at least two pairs of sterile latex gloves. It is also a good idea to include a breathing barrier with a one-way valve for the safe administration of mouth-to-mouth breathing.

Compresses and Bandages

A first aid kid should include a variety of sterile dressings, compresses, gauze and adhesive bandages to stop bleeding and protect wounds. A roll of adhesive cloth tape is also helpful for securing bandages.

Disinfecting Agents

To disinfect wounds and guard against infection, pack antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, burn ointment and a cleansing agent such as anti-bacterial soap.

Tools

A first aid kit should include tools that will make treatment easier and more effective. Include scissors, an oral thermometer, tweezers, a small flashlight, an instant cold compress and a first aid instruction booklet.

Medications

Non-prescription medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, hydrocortisone cream and lidocaine are valuable in first aid. Medications for allergies, nausea and diarrhea are also helpful. Necessary prescription medications can also be included for extra protection.
