An internship is similar to an apprenticeship. Interns serve under a more experienced person in order to understand the intricacies of a particular job or trade. An internship is an opportunity to pair book knowledge with practical training. Internships may be for payment but not always. Sometimes, if the internship is not for payment, the company will pay for the intern's living expenses or other necessities.
Time Period
Internships may last a few days to several years. The more complex the trade, such as a doctor, the longer the internship.
Workday
An internship may be a few hours a week to a full work week or more. Medical students often work around the clock and on weekends during their internship, which is often referred to as a residency.
Demographics
Internships are usually for high school, college or grad school students. The age of the student is often irrelevant.
Duties
Interns may perform those duties of an entry-level person in the field. On the other hand, business interns may be responsible for guiding a project that impacts several departments across an organization.
Benefits
Internships provide an opportunity to network with others in the desired field. When the internship is complete, it is expected that the student will be able to secure employment. The employer also has the opportunity to evaluate the intern's work habits.
