  • There are a few reasons for having fogged windows, some of which can mean that your windows are damaged or not efficient at keeping out the cold.

    Single-Pane Windows

Single-pane windows get fogged when it is cold outside and humid inside. This is a sign that the cold isn't being kept out as well as it would be with insulated or multiple-pane windows.

    Multi-Pane Windows

If your multi-pane windows are fogged, it means that the seal between the panes has been broken and water vapor has gotten in between the panes. They will need to be repaired or replaced.

    Broken Seals

The seal between the panes can be broken by the natural settling of your house, during the window's shipping or installation, or by objects hitting the glass.

    Solution

If your muli-pane windows are fogging, you may not have to replace the entire window. A glass company can repair the window by replacing a pane of glass and restoring the seal.

    Another Solution

Some companies will vent your panes to remove the vapor without requiring you to replace the glass.

    Warranty

If your house is newer construction or had the windows recently replaced, check to see if they are under a manufacturer's warranty. It could save you some money when repairing or replacing windows to prevent further fogging.
