Millions of people throughout the world live with some type of back pain. It can be so severe that it negatively affects other parts of the human body. One of those conditions is called a herniated disc.
Identification
The spine in your back is made of bones that are "cushioned" by small cartilage or discs, according to WebMD. Sometimes called a slipped or ruptured disc, a herniated disc is when it (the disc) gets damaged to the point where it bulges or breaks open.
Effects
Having this condition can meaning moderate to significant pain, weakness or numbness in the lower back area or any part of the spine, as well as your leg or arm. It is more rare to have a herniated disc in the upper back or neck area.
Prevention/Solution
According to the Mayo Clinic, the best way to prevent a herniated disc is to exercise, maintain good posture and healthy weight, and to quit smoking. Pain medication, physical therapy, and the use of cold packs are possible solutions to treat this condition.
significance
Having a herniated disc and the pain associated with it can impair one's ability to perform everyday activities, though it usually doesn't mean one needs to take a trip to the emergency room.
Fun Fact
NBA Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtics player Larry Bird suffered from a herniated disc, which he had surgery to repair in 1991.
Warning
Taking NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can risk gastrointestinal bleeding and consuming acetaminophens (Tylenol) in large amounts risks damaging your liver.
