Hair loss products work in several different ways. Some seek to address the problem at a chemical level, some involve surgical intervention and some rely solely on camouflage.
Chemical Solutions
Finasteride--popularly known by brand name Propecia--is thought to slow hair loss by inhibiting production of a hormone that stops male hair growth. Monoxidil--popularly known by brand name Rogaine--is thought to help hair growth by open up blood vessels; however, the exact mechanism by which it works is not known.
Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is considered the only permanent solution to hair loss. With this method, healthy hair follicles and roots are transplanted onto the balding areas.
Laser Therapy
Laser light therapy is thought to work by stimulating blood flow to shrinking hair follicles, thereby "jump-starting" the follicles to produce hair.
Camouflage
Other products mainly serve to hide the baldness and do not address underlying physiological causes of baldness. Such products include wigs, toupees and "hair systems" that use glue or other attachment mechanisms to add replacement hair as needed on the scalp.
Other Options
Chinese medicine is also used in the treatment of hair loss. This often involves acupuncture, changes in diet and the ingestion of herbal formulas. Another emerging option for the treatment of hair loss is the use of stem cells, though such treatment is still in its infancy.
