  • Getting a regular Pap test from your doctor is the best way to detect cervical cancer in women. However, in addition to cervical cancer, Pap smears are able to inform your doctor of other complications in your gynecological health.

    Collection

A woman's Pap test collects a sample of cells from within the cervix.

    Infections

Pap tests will alert your physician if there is an infection within your cervix, in which case treatment will be needed. Inflammation will often mark infection.

    Abnormal Cells

A Pap test will show the presence of any abnormal cervical cells. These types of cells can eventually become cancerous. Some abnormal cells may also be indications of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as human papillomaviruses (HPV); however, additional tests are needed to confirm STDs. Many abnormal cells are simply unhealthy cells and will go away on their own.

    Cervical Cancer

A Pap test is the easiest way for a doctor to see the first signs of cervical cancer in a woman. When cervical cancer is caught early, there is a higher chance of eradicating it.

    Tumors

Pap smears can also identify if small tumors are present, indicating the presence of cancer.
