  • Echo gas trimmers can get your tangled mess of a yard back into order in no time. They're used to cut down high weeds along sidewalks, around garden fixtures and in landscaping. Gas line trimmers have long been recognized as the standard for a quick-trimming tool needed to maintain medium-weight weeds and tall grass around your home. Over time, the string in the trimmer will run out, however, requiring that you change it. This is a very common maintenance need, according to The Yard and Garden FixItClub, however it is easy to remedy.

    Remove the Head

The first step in replacing the Echo trimmer line is to remove the trimmer head itself. This is fairly easily done by making sure the trimmer is powered OFF, placing the engine of the trimmer on the ground and lifting the trimming head so you can access the bottom of it. Depress the small button on the side of the trimmer head with your thumb, grasp the cylindrical trimmer base, and pull firmly away from the trimmer shaft. The head should disconnect without too much of a problem, however you may need press excessively firmly to get the release button to disengage the trimmer head. Be careful not to lose the large spring that detaches with the trimmer head.

    Restring

Choose the appropriate sized string for the Echo (most likely 0.80 diameter) and then measure six feet of string from the box. Cut the string at this point, fold it in half and then cut the string at the middle point. Place the ends of the two separate pieces of string into the small holes on the interior of the head's string channels. Begin rolling the string onto the head in the direction of the arrows on the lip of the head. Roll the string until you have approximately six inches of string extending from each channel and then attach the string to the string guides.

    Reattach the Head

Reattach the string head to the Echo gas trimmer. Thread each of the strings through their respective holes in the sides of the head mount. Press the string head firmly up into the mount until the mounting button clicks into place. Use a knife to cut each string to three inches in length so that the engine on the Echo trimmer does not get bogged down as it tries to spin the head. Turn the Echo on and give it a spin, pounding the head of the trimmer on the ground if you require more string length.
