  • Dextran infusions are a type of intravenous solution containing iron and carbohydrates used to treat severe iron-deficiency anemia. Despite its effectiveness in the treatment of patients who cannot be treated with oral supplements, dextran poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

    Allergic Reactions

Though rare, some patients develop severe anaphylactic allergic reactions to dextran infusions, which may result in difficulty breathing, shock and even death.

    Time Frame

Severe allergic reactions normally develop within several minutes after the start of dextran infusions, reports the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

    Solution

To minimize the risk of fatal allergic reactions, doctors typically administer dextran infusions only in locations where equipment necessary for resuscitation and doses of the drug epinephrine are available, explains the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

    Other Risks

Other risks associated with dextran infusions include cardiac arrest, severe changes in heart rate or blood pressure levels, respiratory arrest, and seizures, warns the U.S. National Library of Medicine. There is also a chance that dextran may cause the formation of cancerous sarcoma tumors later in life.

    Considerations

Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely administer dextran to pregnant women. If you have a history of decreased liver functioning, kidney disease, heart disease, asthma, allergies or rheumatoid arthritis, it may not be safe for you to receive a dextran infusion, cautions the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
