  • Hamstring pain often results from a strained hamstring muscle. This may occur during sports or other strenuous activities. It is important to consult a doctor to obtain the correct diagnosis and treatment of hamstring pain.

    Identification

The hamstring muscles allow the leg to bend at the knee and extend the hip. The hamstring muscle group consists of three muscles: the biceps femoris, the semitendinous and the semimembranosus. A pulled or strained hamstring muscle is a tear in one of these muscles and can be quite painful.

    Causes

Some causes of a strained hamstring muscle can be jumping, running or sports that require sprinting such as hurdle jumping. Exercising without stretching the hamstring muscles, may also result in a hamstring strain or pain.

    Symptoms

Some of the symptoms of a hamstring strain that may cause pain are a sharp pain during exercise, swelling, bruising, pain while contracting the muscle and a gap in the hamstring muscle.

    Treatment At Home

If you have hamstring pain, you may treat it at home by placing cold packs on the affected area, use a compression bandage, take over-the-counter pain relievers and perform stretching exercises.

    Physician Treatment

If hamstring pain is persistent, it may be necessary to see a doctor. A doctor may order treatments such as ultrasound, an MRI, physical therapy or surgery to repair serious hamstring rupture injuries.
