  • Although there are no medical complications from age spots, these flat brown marks that appear as we age can affect our lives. Age spots, also known as liver spots, can be on any part of the body but are more often found on the hands, neck and face. Bleaching creams containing harmful chemicals are often used, but if you're looking for a more natural alternative there are a number of ingredients in your kitchen that can be used to lighten these spots.

    Homemade Remedies for Age Spots

There are a number of recipes to make your own homemade bleaching cream. However, some ingredients by themselves also can be used. Lemon juice alone can be an effective method for lightening age spots. Take a cotton ball or a cotton swab soaked in fresh-squeezed lemon juice and dab it directly onto the spots. Aloe vera is another way to lighten age spots when applied directly to the spots.

    Onions and Apple Cider Vinegar

The acidity from the juice of an onion mixed with the exfoliation and healing properties of apple cider vinegar can have a bleaching effect. Chop up an onion and squeeze it through a strainer or cheese cloth to get the juice. Then mix it with equal parts apple cider vinegar. Apply this mixture twice a day for a month.

    Milk and Yogurt Recipes

Milk, buttermilk and yogurt are common ingredients in homemade bleaching creams. Try dabbing buttermilk on spots or mix ¼ cup of plain yogurt, 1/8 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera. Use this mixture as a mask, allowing it to dry for 10 minutes. Rinse and repeat. Wash your face and then apply lemon juice to the spots and let it dry. Follow with a moisturizer. You also can dry orange peels in the sun. When they are completely dry, grind them up into a powder and mix with milk. Apply this everyday to your spots and rinse when it's dried.

    From the Inside Out

Although age spots themselves are not harmful, they are often a sign of sun damage or an inner imbalance. Pair these homemade bleaching creams with plenty of water and diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Taking vitamin E has been shown to improve cellular tissue repair as well as slow the aging process.

    Protect Your Skin

Be patient when trying any of these homemade bleaching creams. These spots are the result of years of sun damage and won't disappear overnight. Of course, none of these remedies matter if you don't protect your skin from future spotting. Prevent more damage by always using sunscreen any time you're out in the sun. Wearing hats and other protective clothing will protect you from acquiring more age spots.
