Consumer Reports rated dozens of desktop and laptop computers on its subscription-based site and, as of January 2010, the Dell Studio XPS SX8000-2361JBK gets the highest overall score. Dell's Inspiron 546 desktop is also a recommended model. Among laptops, the Dell Studio XPS 16 gets a Consumer Reports recommendation. The report likes the performance, ergonomics and display of all three models.

On the Other: Reliability Could Be An Issue with Laptops

Consumer Reports surveyed 75,000 computer owners and determined that 21 percent of all Dell laptops have needed repairs or experienced serious problems not due to age. This is tied for the highest percentage among all brands. Dell's desktop models, meanwhile, needed repairs 20 percent of the time, which was fourth-best among seven brands.

    Bottom Line

Dell makes many laptop and desktop computer models and some get excellent reviews. Others are merely average, and the brand as a whole is not tops in reliability. Some Dells are, indeed, good---but the Dell brand name alone is not enough to ensure a quality purchase.
