  • The essence of Darwin's Theory of Evolution is that all life forms are related and have descended from a common ancestor. Over time, each life form transforms, keeping beneficial traits in order to survive. The progression slowly takes place from simple life form to more complex.

    Natural Selection

Natural selection enables a life form to continue its existence by acquiring advantageous traits that allow it to survive in its environment. Nature selection discontinues any life form that is incapable of surviving in its surroundings. In a nutshell, natural selection will either destroy an inferior life form or the life form will adapt to harsh environmental changes.

    On the Origin of Species

Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 -- April 19, 1882) published his scientific theory of evolution in his book, "On the Origin of Species," in 1859. The cited research explores the evidence, experimentation and exploration he completed during his expedition on the ship Beagle. This research became the basis of his theory of evolution by natural selection.

    From Monkey to Man

Darwin's theories concluded that intellectual behaviors have developed from the primitive instincts of nonhuman behaviors. He also states that man has developed from lower animals, especially the apes. The theory is backed up by research and studies pertaining to the similarities in skeletal structure of primitive man and ancient monkeys.

    The Controversy

Darwin's claim that human beings evolved from apes has caused a controversial debate with many religious groups through the decades. The attempts to attack and disprove Darwin's theories have been rampant. Even scientists have attempted to disprove his findings.

    Social Darwinism

Darwin's theory has also been applied to the sociological field. Social Darwinism is the philosophical concept of human competition, and how only the fit and the strong survive in societies.
