In acid reflux disease, acid contents from the stomach rise into the esophagus. Hereditary can be a factor, but may not be direct and clear-cut. Anatomical weaknesses in the stomach and esophagus may contribute to acid reflux, especially if other factors like obesity and longterm use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also exist.
