Consumer Reports rated more than 100 washing models based on seven different criteria, and gave its highest rating, "excellent," to the Speed Queen front-loading model for two of the seven categories--energy efficiency and water efficiency. It also gave the Speed Queen top-loading model an excellent rating on vibration.

On the Other: They come up short on value

The same report stated the front-loading Speed Queen was average or fair on washing performance, gentleness, noise and vibration. The retail price of that model was roughly $1,600, making it one of the most expensive consumer washers available. The top-loading Speed Queen, meanwhile, costs only $800 but got one of Consumer Reports' worst overall ratings because of less-then-stellar marks in every category except vibration.

    Bottom Line

Consumer Reports liked the front-loading Speed Queen, but not as much as many less-expensive models. The top-loading model, meanwhile, received a poor review. With so many washing machine manufacturers to choose from, Speed Queen does not provide a good overall value.
