  • Although the causes of depression are often the same for men and women, there are certain triggers that might have a greater impact on men. Research so far has not provided definitive answers as to how depression develops.

    Biology

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), biochemical processes in the brain that regulate mood and behavior do not operate correctly in people with depression.

    Genetics

The NIMH also believes that genetics plays a key role in causing depression, although many people develop depression even though there is no family history of it.

    Stress

Stress over work, money or family often affects men more than women. A large body of research indicates that men are less likely to seek help for depression despite being frequently impacted by such concerns.

    Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling

Men are more likely than women to develop alcohol, drug or gambling problems. As a result, men are often treated for these issues while the real issue, depression, is ignored. Left untreated, the depression gets worse and is exacerbated by drinking, drugs and/or gambling.

    Stigma

The stigma men face over exhibiting signs of sadness might keep them from seeking help. A man might have undiagnosed and untreated depression, which might turn from mild or episodic to more debilitating.
