A person who is proactive will get far in life because he or she does not merely react to external forces. Instead, the person chooses how he or she wants to respond to a certain stimulus. This route opens up more choices and opportunities than if the person were being passive and doing nothing in the present moment.

On the Other: Developing Bad Habits

A person who is too proactive, however, can end up developing bad habits. The person might always be proactive in everything he or she does. But if the person does not take time to reflect on his or her actions or learn from mistakes, he or she can become overconfident or stubborn, resulting in slow or insignificant progress.

    Bottom Line

Choices and opportunities are fewer or nonexistent when a person is not being proactive. But progress is slow or insignificant when a person is ignorant of the outcomes of his or her consistent actions. An effective way for a person to get far in life is to be proactive and also self-reflective, so he or she can improve upon the actions the next day.
