Cottonseed oil can pose numerous dangers to men because the oil is naturally toxic and high in fat. Certain foods prepared with cottonseed oil also can contain large quantities of pesticide residue.
Fat Content
Dr. Andrew Weil regards cottonseed oil as unhealthy because it contains a lot of saturated fat, which can raise cholesterol, and little monounsaturated fat, which can lower cholesterol.
Toxicity
Cottonseeds contain the naturally occurring poison gossypol, which is so toxic it is frequently used as a pesticide on other plants.
FDA Regulation
Cotton plants are not regulated as food crops by the FDA, so the pesticide and chemical content can vary. As a result, many foods prepared with cottonseed oil can contain large quantities of pesticide residue.
Mercury Exposure
Cotton often develops a fungus in storage, so is typically treated with a mercury-based fungicide. Exposure to mercury can cause irritability, insomnia and delirium.
Infertility
Despite being treated with fungicide, cottonseeds can contain the fungus aflatoxin, which is known to cause decreased male fertility.
