The atypical antipsychotic medication ziprasidone is sold under the brand name Geodon. The medication treats schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Tourette's syndrome and works, in part, by moderately blocking the reuptake of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and serotonin.
Extrapyramidal Symptoms
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, between 2 and 31 percent of Geodon patients experience side effects that originate in the extrapyramidal portion of the central nervous system. This portion controls movement and muscle tone. The most common extrapyramidal effect of Geodon is akathisia, a severe restlessness with a physical manifestation, such as rocking. Between 2 and 10 percent of patients experience akathisia.
Other CNS Symptoms
Other central nervous system symptoms have high numbers of commonality. 8 to 31 percent of patients experience somnolence, or severe drowsiness. 3 to 18 percent get headaches and 3 to 16 percent experience dizziness.
Cardiovascular Symptoms
Chest pain and postural hypertension occur in 5 percent of patients. Two percent of patients report general hypertension, bradycardia, or tachycardia.
Gastrointestinal Symptoms
Ten percent of Geodon patients gain weight. Constipation afflicts 2 to 9 percent, 1 to 8 percent have dyspepsia, and 3 to 5 percent experience nausea and/or vomiting.
Miscellanious Symptoms
Three to 6 percent of patients experience vision problems. Eight percent get a respiratory infection. Two to 6 percent have an all-over feeling of weakness.
