There are several commercially available whitening pens; these are pen-shaped dispensers of whitening gel. The gel is applied directly to teeth, ensuring contact with all tooth surfaces. The gel dispensed in a BriteSmile pen contains the same whitening agents as most gel trays or strips (a hydrogen peroxide mixture). If whitening strips or trays have been effective for you, then odds are BriteSmile whitening pens will also work. The main advantage of the tooth-whitening pen is that the user is able to spot-treat problem stains or areas of discoloration when necessary. Much less time needs to be invested per treatment as well.

On the Other: There are more effective options

The biggest criticism of whitening pens, including BriteSmile pens, is that it is difficult for the whitening agent to remain on the tooth's surface long enough for effective results. To achieve desired results, the solution must remain in contact with the tooth's surface for an appropriate amount of time. If this does not happen (due to saliva in the mouth washing the product away, or gums/tongue getting in the way) the results will be minimal or will require an extended number of treatments.Tray-based whitening and teeth-whitening strips achieve direct and continuous contact with the teeth for the optimal amount of time.

    Bottom Line

Whitening pens have a few advantages over trays and gels, with spot cleaning and daily time investment being the major two. However, you may want to consider other tooth whitening options. By using the same active ingredients and a much more effective active-ingredient delivery method, commercially available trays and gels seem the better option.
