  • In cats, jaundice is medically referred to as icterus. There are three main categories in which the causes of jaundice may fall. Understanding the causes of jaundice can help pet owners get their pet the necessary medical attention.

    Identification

Jaundice is easily identified as a yellow pigmentation of the gums, on the ears (pinnae), in the skin and the white portions of the eyes (sclarae).

    Red Blood Cell Destruction

When the red blood cells are destroyed by the body---usually in the spleen, liver or the blood vessels---it can cause feline jaundice. In cats, this process is known as hemolysis.

    Bile Duct Obstruction

The bile duct is vital for carrying digestion and bile from the feline gall bladder and into the small intestines. If the bile duct becomes obstructed, it can lead to feline jaundice.

    Liver Disease

Any disease that directly affects the liver, either by trapping bile within the liver or destroying the liver cells, can lead to feline jaundice.

    Treatment

Feline jaundice is a symptom of a disease, rather than a disease itself. To treat icterus, the veterinarian will treat the underlying cause, such as liver disease. With successful treatment, jaundice will clear up accordingly.
