Paraprofessional education is training for a job to assist a professional. Examples of paraprofessionals include teacher assistants, library support staff, paralegals, home health aides and veterinary assistants. Paraprofessional education may include an associate's degree or certificate program.
Teacher Assistant
Teacher assistants are found in all grade levels from pre-school through 12th grade, often in special education classrooms. A high school diploma is required, and some school districts require college coursework.
Library Support Staff
Library technicians help librarians circulate print materials, maintain electronic cataloging systems and operate audiovisual equipment. The position requires a high school diploma, and some libraries require college courses. Almost all positions require computer skills.
Paralegal
Paralegals assist attorneys. An associate's degree in paralegal studies or a paralegal certificate is required, ideally in a program approved by the American Bar Association.
Home Health Aide
Home health aides are usually trained on the job or before taking care of a client in their home. After training, federally funded organizations require an exam and certification.
Veterinary Technician
Veterinary technician programs require two-year associates degree. All states require that candidates pass an exam after completing courses, most often the National Veterinary Technician exam.
