<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Some Hair Loss Shampoos May Work
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has only approved minoxidil and propecia as treatments for hair loss. However, a study performed by the Department of Dermatopathology at the University of Liege, Belgium, suggests that the active ingredient, ketoconazole, which is in Nizoral and Revita shampoos, may help fight against genetic hair loss.
On the Other: No Proof That Shampoos Work for Hair Loss
If shampoos containing ketoconazole work at all to prevent hair loss, it is because they remove sebum from the scalp, which unclogs hair follicles, almost like unclogging a drain, according to the HairLossLearningCenter.com. The theory is that with the sebum removed, the hair will be exposed to more nutrition.
Bottom Line
There is no scientific proof that any shampoos work for hair loss treatment. However, shampoos that contain ketoconazole remove sebum from the hair follicles, making them a good compliment to a hair loss regime using minoxidil or propecia.
