<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Fluorescents Can Be Used as Grow Lights
Fluorescent lights come in many types. Full-spectrum fluorescent lights are relatively inexpensive and easy to find and use. A full-spectrum fluorescent light mimics sunlight by providing plants with the broadest possible range of light color. For houseplants of home garden seedlings started indoors, full-spectrum fluorescent lights are a good choice.
On the Other: HID Grow Lights Produce the Most Light
High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights are powerful lamps used by commercial growers. They emit about twice the light as a typical fluorescent or incandescent light bulb. They require special fixtures and come in very high wattage. If you are a commercial grower HIDs are a good choice.
Bottom Line
Whether typical fluorescent lights or HID grow lights are better for your plants depends on what kind of plants you are growing and why. Many plants grown indoors for commercial reasons will do best under HIDs, whereas most home houseplant hobbyists or backyard gardeners can see satisfactory results with full-spectrum fluorescents.
