Fingernail fungus is a condition characterized by the presence of microorganisms that infect the nails or nail beds. It typically occurs when a warm, moist environment creates circumstances favorable to its growth.
The Facts
According to Mayo Clinic, microscopic fungal organisms can invade the fingernail through tiny cuts or small separations between the nail and nail bed. The resulting infection is also known as onychomycosis.
Symptoms
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) cites signs of fingernail infection that may include curls and other shape distortions, yellow or white discolorations, abnormal nail thickness or brittleness, jagged nail edges and pain.
Treatments
Treatments for a fungal nail infection include oral antifungals (Sporanox, Lamisil), antifungal nail polish (Penlac), topical antifungals and over-the-counter medications. Individuals with severe infections may require surgical removal of the affected nail.
Considerations
Infections most typically occur in individuals over age 60, as well as in people with circulation difficulties or diabetes.
Environment
Working in a wet environment may also raise chances of developing fingernail fungus, according to the AAFP.
