  • Portable toilets, nicknamed "porta potties," are a very convenient way to provide restroom facilities to guests at an outdoor event or to take along on a camping trip. Waste is stored in a tank, which must be emptied as it reaches capacity. Emptying your tank is not the only way to keep your porta potty clean though. You should learn how to properly clean your porta potty to maintain its functionality and sanitation.

    Tank Cleaning

Empty and rinse the bottom tank thoroughly to wash away any solid waste. Use a garden hose and dump the dirty water outdoors to avoid spillage onto indoor surfaces. Operate the pump before removing the top tank. This will remove and drain all of the tank mix from the top tank so that you can add a sanitizing solution. Use bleach to clean the tank. Mix it with water first to add extra volume and allow the bleach to thoroughly sanitize each crevice of the top tank. Leave the bleach solution in the tank and reconnect it to the porta potty pump with the bottom tank. The pump will distribute the bleach solution throughout all of the lines and clear away debris as well as sanitize them. Remove the bottom tank to spread the bleach solution evenly throughout it. Shake it vigorously to spread the bleach solution inside. Leave the tanks to air-dry open and upside-down to prevent mildew.

    Toilet Cassette

The seals on your toilet cassette must be regularly cleaned. The solution that is recommended by the manufacturer is best. If you do not have your manual or you cannot access it for some reason, use olive oil to coat them and wipe any waste or debris away. Olive oil will keep the seals and gaskets pliable and less likely to rupture or fail. Do not use any household cleaning chemicals or other types of oils.

    Interior

Keep the porta potty dry at all times. Check for moisture from shoes and bodily fluids as often as necessary. Dry up any moisture with a clean, dry cloth or mop to avoid the growth of mold and mildew. Use a disinfectant to clean the interior of the porta potty regularly. Disinfectants come in many forms, but bleach may be the most effective. Use a bleach-and-water mixture if you are not sure what to use. Bleach will effectively clean the germs left on a toilet seat, door latch, floors and walls. Keeping the interior of the porta potty sanitary will prevent the spread of bacteria and even disease.
