It might be a cracked rib or even a lung infection. Go to your neatest emergency room or anywhere else where they cannot refuse to see you.

This is very strange. I have had the same symptom for a few days and just figured I would do a search for pain in left upper rib and to my surprise I see that others have had this. Has anyone found out what this is? I figure that it will go away but I have to really push in on the rib when I lie down or cough or turn. I guess it isn't normal, huh? I will watch for answers or I guess go to see the dr. Thanks

Costochondritis is inflammation of the ribs' junctions to the breastbone and cartilidge. It is very painful! I have been living with this for 12 days now. The first 4 days I ignored it until I couldn't stand it anymore and went to the ER. It turned out to be costocondritis. Goggle it and you can see what it is. No pain meds work. What did work for me for about 8 hours was an injection of Toradol sp? It is an anti-imflammatory but it wore off and the horrible pain was back again. It can last to 6 weeks and then come back again. It is sometimes associated with a pulled muscle of fibromyalgia ( I have fibromyalgia...this is awful also..) It won't kill you but it sure hurts. Don't strain your ribs picking anything heavy up and hold a pillow or something against yourself when you laugh or cough. I notice when I am sleeping, and am on my back I get stuck from the pain and it is definately a "10" on the pain meter. Ouch! I was thinking of going to my PCP dr. this week if there is no relief. Good luck to you. Hopefully, this helped.

I also have walking pneumonia, and figured it was a complication from that. My sister also has walking pneumonia, but doesn't have the pain in the rib. Shoot. I was hoping that it would just go away.

It could be anthing, but you NEED to go to the nearest ER. No hospital will turn you down in their ER department and all are required to treat you. They can bill you for the service before you leave.
