In 1965, a Swiss inventor named Sten Gustaf Thulin, while working for the company Celloplast, was awarded a patent for an invention described as a "bag made of weldable plastic material such as polyethylene, polypropylene or the like, provided with one or more handles." This became the ubiquitous plastic shopping bag.
