Experian is one of three major credit bureaus in the United States, along with TransUnion and Equifax. The company provides a variety of services relating to judging the creditworthiness of individuals and companies.
Founding
Experian began as CNN Systems in England in 1980 and expanded across the Atlantic in the mid-1990s.
Credit Reports
Experian is one of the three credit bureaus required to provide consumers a free credit report once per year by federal law.
Credit Scores
Lenders request Experian's credit scores when individuals apply for loans, such as mortgages, credit cards and auto loans.
Business Customers
A less well known side of Experian includes services for business-to-business customers. Experian keeps records of how well businesses handle their outstanding debts, so other businesses can determine whether to loan them money.
