Prior to applying to medical billing school there are a few things that should be considered to make your new career choice a success. Familiarity with the learning institutions in your area as well as basic knowledge of the job and job market are important aspects of transitioning to the medical workforce.

Medical Billing and Coding

It is important to understand what will be required in your new field prior to making a career change. Medical billing and coding generally involves preparing insurance claims, interviewing patients and documenting the information with the proper codes. Medical billing is an important part of medical coding and usually a person performs both billing and coding procedures. You will need to learn an indexing and coding system that is federally recognized and be able to maintain accurate computer records.

Online vs. Classroom

Decide if a hands-on classroom experience or an online education better suits your needs. Sometimes online education works better for people who have inflexible schedules, such as full-time jobs with family responsibilities. An online education allows a person to work and study at home during the hours they have available. Classroom experience can be a valuable tool for some, allowing networking opportunities among students and faculty and providing a learning environment that may be more suited to an individual's needs.

Choosing a School

Once you have decided to pursue a classroom or online education, research potential schools and speak with admissions counselors at each school. The counselors will give you information about the length of the program, tuition costs, class scheduling options and post-educational requirements.
