Animals and plants of Cuba are very colorful, with the bright greens and reds of parakeets to the bright green bark of the Bombax emarginatum tree. There are some species of animals endemic to Cuba, such as bats that feeds on fish, and Cuban hutias, the largest Cuban mammal.
Cuban Hutias
Cuban hutias have multicolored fur of black, red, yellow, black and brown. They are about 45 inches long and weigh around 19 pounds, being the largest land mammal in Cuba.
Greater Bulldog Bats
Greater bulldog bats, also known as fishing bats, have a 3-foot long wingspan and grow to be about 5 inches long. They live in caves or hollow trees, only hunting at night.
Cuban Parakeets
Cuban parakeets are small birds, only about 10 inches long, with green feathers and red coloring at the bend of the wing. Other red feather markings are scattered throughout the head and breast.
Bombax Emarginatum
The Bombax emarginatum is a bright green-barked tree from the Caballos Mountains in the upper elevations. It provides habitats for bromeliads and orchids.
Palm Trees
The palm tree is found in every area of Cuba, accenting the beautiful scenery of the island. There are 22 different varieties of palms in the area.
