On cars without distributors, the camshaft position sensor (CPS) provides information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that calculates when to fire the fuel injectors and spark plugs, according to Pelican Parts. If the CPS is faulty, "your car will run very erratically or perhaps not at all." Symptoms of a faulty CPS include rough running, bucking, hesitation, stalling on acceleration and poor fuel economy.
