According to the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 32 percent of people would like to improve the appearance of their teeth. Teeth whiteners are one of the most popular ways to get a better smile.
Benefits
In general, whiter teeth are more aesthetically pleasing than stained or darker teeth. People associate white teeth with beauty and people with white teeth tend to smile more.
Misconceptions
Teeth whiteners only restore teeth to their natural shade of white. Teeth bleachers, as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, can get teeth whiter than normal by using bleach, such as hydrogen peroxide.
Time Frame
Dentists can usually whiten teeth using a combination of chemical bleach and lasers in as little as two to four weeks, as long as the patient follows directions and applies the whitener every day.
Cost
Teeth whitening is one of the cheapest ways to improve the look of a person's teeth. Over-the-counter bleaching kits cost as little as $20. Whitening by a professional dentists costs about $650.
Warning
Dentists advise against pregnant women using teeth-bleaching chemicals. In addition, whiteners are no substitute for brushing and flossing. People should also stay away from dark liquids after teeth whitening, or at least sip them with a straw.
