The decision to weave or braid hair is one which depends heavily on the style desired. Weaves add additional hair, and thus additional length, to existing hair. Braids are a way of styling existing hair which typically involves pulling the strands tight and locking the strands into that position with either a knot or external device. It is even possible to braid hair which has been lengthened by a weave.

On the Other: Both Can Cause Damage

Both weaves and braids can damage hair. Weaves bond synthetic or natural hair to existing hair, increasing its length. This can be accomplished with heat or glue, both of which last only a few months and can cause significant damage if done improperly. Either method can also inhibit the growth of new hair. Braids cause less damage, but can still cause broken hair, rashes or even baldness if the hair is pulled too tightly. Liberal usage of conditioner can greatly reduce the damage caused by braids.

    Bottom Line

Braids can be used without the need for chemicals or heat. So braids are probably better for hair than weaves. However, braids can still damage hair and they should not be pulled too tightly. Use of a hair conditioner with braids is recommended.
