  • A visa is a document granting permission for an individual to enter a country. In the United Kingdom, there are differences between a spousal visa and a fiance(e) visa. The differences relate to the term of the visa, employment, extension, the date of the visa and health screening. Applications for both visas must be submitted to the UK Border Agency.

    Term of the Visa

A spousal visa gives a spouse two years to stay in the United Kingdom. A fiance(e) visa gives a fiance(e) six months to remain in the United Kingdom.

    Employment

A spousal visa grants a spouse permission to work in the United Kingdom. A fiance(e) visa does not grant permission to work.

    Extensions

The term of a spousal visa may be extended indefinitely upon application prior to the end of the two-years term. The term of a fiancé(e) visa may not be extended unless a marriage takes place before the end of the six-months term.

    Date of Visa

The UK Border Agency can post-date a spousal visa by three months for future travel plans. This accommodation cannot be made for a fiance(e) visa.

    Health Screening

Because the term of a spousal visa exceeds six months, the applicant must be screened for tuberculosis prior to the visa's issuance
