For artistic scanning, the top of an HP scanner can be removed, the scanner set on its side and an image---such as an orchid---scanned to achieve a stunning effect. However, placing an HP scanner on its side is not recommended due to the possibility of internal parts damage as well as unbalancing the scanner in such a way that it falls from your desk or table. Doing so may also void your warranty.
