According to Women'sHealth.gov, one in four women who die each year in the United States dies of heart disease. As a woman ages, her risk for heart disease increases--but younger women can also be at risk.
Common Symptoms
Signs of a heart attack are pain and discomfort in the chest area, arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach. Nausea, lightheadedness, shortness of breath and a cold sweat can also occur.
Other Symptoms
Women may also have heartburn, loss of appetite, fatigue, coughing and heart fluttering. Women experience these symptoms in relation to a heart attack more often than men do.
Warning
Heart attack symptoms can occur suddenly or they can develop over a few hours, days or even weeks. Seeking medical help quickly increases survival rate.
Prevention/Solution
The American Heart Association cites good nutrition; at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day; lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure; and not smoking as some preventors of heart attack.
Considerations
WomenHeart says that African American and Hispanic American women have a higher risk of heart attack due to factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.
